Identity and access management systems have been designed around a single assumption: the user is human. For decades, this has made sense. The IAM stack’s core assumption—that auditors can interview a user and understand why they need specific access—breaks down completely when the “user” is an algorithm.
The Attack Surface That Legacy Tools Miss
Legacy IAM solutions focus on three critical problems: authentication (proving who you are), authorization (deciding what you can do), and audit (recording who did what). For humans, this works reasonably well.
For machines, these tools create dangerous blind spots. AI agents authenticating with shared credentials cannot be individually tracked. Service accounts with standing privileges cannot be automatically revoked when they’re no longer needed. Machine identity governance requires different enforcement mechanisms: continuous monitoring, real-time revocation, and permission models that account for the speed at which machine identities operate.
Without dedicated NHI security solutions, enterprises face a critical risk: AI agents operating with unchecked permissions, accumulating privileges, and moving laterally across systems with visibility that traditional IAM tools simply cannot provide.
