When an AI agent assumes the identity of a service account, it doesn’t just gain access to a single resource. It inherits all accumulated permissions—sometimes dating back years. This permission inheritance pattern represents one of the most dangerous vulnerabilities in machine identity security.
The Legacy Permissions Problem
Service accounts in most enterprises are created once and rarely deprovisioned. They accumulate permissions over time as they’re assigned to new applications and workflows. A database service account might have been created five years ago to support a single application. Over time, additional systems needed database access, so rather than create new accounts, administrators simply granted the existing service account additional database roles.
When an AI agent or microservice assumes this service account—either through legitimate application code or through a security breach—it inherits the entire accumulated permission set. The agent may only need access to two specific database tables, but it now has administrative rights across the entire system.
This pattern, called “permission inheritance,” is a direct consequence of IAM systems designed for humans. You can interview an employee about their access needs and audit their permissions quarterly. You cannot meaningfully audit the access needs of every machine identity that might use a service account.
Why This Creates An Agentic Identity Crisis
Traditional IAM assumes that access rights should be “sticky”—once granted, permissions tend to persist. This makes sense for employees with stable roles. It’s catastrophic for machine identities that can operate at scale.
An AI agent with overprivileged service account credentials can:
Move Laterally across systems the original application never needed, exploiting permissions that should have been revoked years ago.
Exfiltrate Data from systems far beyond its intended scope, limited only by the inherited permissions of the service account it’s using.
Establish Persistence by creating backdoors in systems it shouldn’t have access to in the first place.
The Solution: Purpose-Built Machine Identity Governance
Non-human identity security requires continuous monitoring of service account permissions combined with automated enforcement. Rather than relying on quarterly audits and human decision-making, NHI platforms must:
Maintain an inventory of all service accounts and every permission they hold.
Analyze which applications and workloads actually use each service account, at what time, and for what purpose.
Automatically identify and revoke permissions that haven’t been accessed in a defined time period.
Enforce least-privilege access at machine speed, removing permissions that exceed what the application actually requires.
For CISOs, the implication is stark: AI agents and autonomous systems cannot safely operate in environments where service accounts retain legacy permissions. Non-human identity security demands active, continuous management of machine identity entitlements.
