The continued expansion of identity security platforms reflects a basic change in enterprise risk: identity is now the control plane for people, applications, machines and AI-driven services. A short market reference to SailPoint may appear simple, but the underlying issue for IGA practitioners is how organisations can govern an expanding set of identities without adding more manual process and review fatigue.

Most enterprises already struggle with incomplete visibility. Application owners may know their own entitlements, infrastructure teams may manage service accounts and HR may own workforce data, yet no single process explains how access should change when a person moves roles or an application is retired. The result is excessive privilege, inconsistent approvals and slow removal of access that is no longer justified.

Identity governance administration addresses this by connecting identity data to policy and business context. Access should be requested against a role or business purpose, provisioned through controlled workflows and removed when the underlying relationship changes. Certifications should be risk-based, giving managers useful information instead of presenting long lists of entitlements with no explanation.

The next challenge is non-human identity. APIs, workloads, bots and AI agents often outnumber employees, but they may lack clear owners or expiration dates. Treating these identities as first-class governance objects allows teams to record their permissions, credentials, dependencies and operating boundaries. It also supports more precise detection when an identity behaves outside its expected pattern.

For buyers, platform value should be measured through outcomes rather than feature volume. Relevant measures include application coverage, time to revoke access, reduction in standing privilege, certification quality and the percentage of machine identities with accountable owners. As identity becomes central to cloud and AI adoption, IGA will be judged by how well it makes access explainable, limited and continuously aligned to business need.
